This evening I have a very special co host Steve Stanger who is the host of the Mac Attack Podcast http://themacattack.us/. Steve and I get togetehr once a month and focus on tips and tricks to keep your Mac running great and what to do when it's not. So Steve welcome.

I went back and looked at the apps we talked about during our maintenance, troubleshooting, & backup shows. Which ones are Leopard friendly, which aren't? (I've also included some other Leopard friendly apps).

Why the delay on seeing some of these apps updated? I've heard from a number of developers that the biggest problem is that Apple is not providing reasonable information, like release notes for Leopard, to developers on things that were either changed or removed from the Unix underpinnings of OS X.

Maintenance & Troubleshooting apps

(Leopard friendly? If the answer is YES make sure you are running the latest version of the software for Leopard compatibility)

  • MainMenu - YES - free - (http://www.santasw.com/) - Run all the various tools and scripts to keep your Mac running smoothly. Quick and easy, right from your menu bar. Rebuild Spotlight library for faster searching, repairing permissions, cleaning caches to improve application performance, enabling and disabling the Dashboard. Slick, simple interface.

  • Cocktail - YES - shareware - (http://www.maintain.se/cocktail/buy.php) - Smooth and powerful digital toolset with a variety of features that simplifies the use of advanced UNIX functions. Disk, system, & file maintenance, Network & Interface settings.

  • Alsoft's DiskWarrior - YES - Commercial - (http://www.alsoft.com/DiskWarrior/ ) - DiskWarrior 4.0 will successfully rebuild a disk that has Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard installed or a disk that has been attached to a computer running Leopard. Some operating system functionality has changed within Leopard itself. There are some compatibility issues when running an installed copy of DiskWarrior 4.0 while started up from Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard. Alsoft currently recommends that you DO NOT run DiskWarrior 4.0 while the computer is started from Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard. Instead, to run DiskWarrior, you should start up the computer from either - A DiskWarrior 4.0 CD or any disk that starts up in 10.4.x and then run DiskWarrior 4.0.

  • Drive Genius - YES - commercial - (ard drive maintenance and management ) - hard drive maintenance and management software.

  • Preferential Treatment - freeware - (http://www.jonn8.com/html/pt.html) check your preference files (both in your user’s preference folder and the system’s preference folder) for corruption. If it finds suspect files, it will list the files and allow you to reveal them in the Finder or move them to the trash.

Backup apps

  • De Ja Vu -YES - shareware - (http://propagandaprod.com/) - Another bootable clone app. Also allows you to backup individual folders separately. (i.e. you only want to backup your Home folder or your Documents folder on a daily basis, while making a full backup of your hard drive on a weekly basis.)

  • Synchronize! Pro X - Yes - shareware - file synchronization and backup utility.

Customization apps (Enable "hidden" system settings, etc.)

(Note: front end to to a lot of terminal commands)

  • Tinkertool - YES - freeware - (http://www.bresink.com/osx/TinkerTool.html) gives you access to additional preference settings Apple has built into Mac OS X. This allows to activate hidden features in the operating system and in some of the applications delivered with the system.

  • Mac Pilot - YES - shareware - Does what Tinkertool does and more. Their web site says "unlock over 350 hidden features and other UNIX commands with ease." (i.e. Optimize your network, customize Apple file sharing, lock or unlock files and a lot more. )

Dock modification and other misc apps

  • HerarcialDock - YES - freeware - (www.eternalstorms.at/utilities/hierdock/index.html) - HierarchicalDock is a simple application for creating folders in your Dock that have hierarchical menus.

  • Quay - Yes - shareware - (www.brockerhoff.net/quay/) - a simple app that brings back the hierarchical menus, but with several additional capabilities.

  • Docktopus (love this name and a neat idea) - YES - shareware - (http://www.cesoft.com/products/docktopus.html) is a Mac OS X Dock enhancement that gives you instant access to useful information and powerful new commands through your Dock icons. Similar to the way Apple Mail uses a badge to display the number of unread messages from its Dock icon, Docktopus allows you to overlay custom badges on your Dock icons.

  • Skype - YES - freeware (http://skype.com) New version - Compatibility with Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard firewall
