This evening my Guest Co-Hostess is Allison Sheridan from the NossilaCast found over at www.podfeet.com

Welcome back to the show Allison.

Lovely to be here Victor!

Allison what's been going on since you were last on here in October over at the NosillaCast http://www.podfeet.com/wordpress/ ? Catch us up on your show

Wow - it's been a crazy time between the regular show and the MacRoundtable and the Views from the Coop podcast and MacDay LA and my own show and now this show - heck, you'd think I was trying to be Victor Cajiao or something!

the biggest change is Chit Chat Across the Pond with Bart Busschots (http://bartbusschots.ie) is now a regular part of the show.  People love Bart, in fact I'm a bit jealous of all the fan mail he gets!

Questions or comments from the live listeners

A: Allison you find and review many very cool software, web based and other services during your show. I thought we'd talk a bit how WE go about finding these gems on the interwebs.

listeners! they send me stuff - especially

A. Allisons tricks and what's your latest and coolest find

- I actually get most of mine from listeners to the show!  there's Leo and Bart and Niraj and a plethora of people who've given me one each.  I don't do much work at all any more!  If I'm really bored, then I sort by freeware in Version tracker!  (right with you on Mac Reviewcast too).

B. Victor's' Tricks

- Apple has one of the best sources to find new software over at  http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/

They have software by category and both freeware and share ware are here

- I subscribe to the Version Tracker daily letter over at http://www.versiontracker.com

We all know that Version Tracker is a great place to find any kind of Macsoftware but by getting the daily newsletter I always know what is going on .

- Mac Update http://www.macupdate.com/index.php?os=macosx

Like version trackers these guys do a great job of keeping up with all the latest software, however they also have som very good deals that if youy keep your eye on you can save some serious cash.

- The Mac Orchardhttp://www.macorchard.com/ is probably a bit less known but they have a great collection of Internet applications and related resources for Macintosh Internet users, along with Internet software

- i use this  http://osx.iusethis.com/  is a way for you to organize your applications as well as discover new ones. It's kind of like DIGG in that you tell it if you have X or Y application, that way you can see the most popular ones. Of course I use an application called AppFresh whic is an auto discovery tool that helps you keep all your software up to date.  http://osx.iusethis.com/app/versions/appfresh

-MacMerc http://www.macmerc.com/

This blog does a very good job of writting short and clean articles regarding new releases as well as updates to some of our favorites.

- Of course I have to say that The Macreview cast http://www.macreviewcast.com/

is a great source. I listen to this show every week and find new stuff that I have no idea where Tim comes us with. He does a fantastic job.

- The Mac Orchardhttp://www.macorchard.com/ is probably a bit less known but they have a great collection of Internet applications and related resources for Macintosh Internet users, along with Internet software

Also I wanted to cover some great support and "Fix it sites"

- iFixit -- http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/ - an awesome site for visual guides on repairing your mac. they also sell replacement parts.

- Maxfixit.com - http://www.macfixit.com - a subscription service for old articles, but they give recent stuff free. Also good tutorials.

- O'Reilly Mac Dev Center -- http://www.macdevcenter.com/ -- sometimes you need to dig around, but its chocked full of apple tech stuff.

- Mac Geekery -- http://www.macgeekery.com (for the geek) --

- Macosx.com -- http://www.macosx.com (free help)

- TheXLab.com -- http://www.thexlab.com (very detailed articles).

- OSXFaq.com -- http://www.osxfaq.com

- Mac 101 -- http://www.apple.com/support/mac101/ (first place I send a new user).

- Mac Support documents via RSS -- http://www.apple.com/support/rss/ (to help keep me up to date on new stuff).

How do you guys in the live audience find cool stuff

B: How do we take some time away from our computers and relax? Or do we?

A. What Allison Does then discussion

- Jogging on the beach (while listening to podcasts), watching All My Children at the gym while lifting or running, washing/waxing cars while listening to podcasts, power washing my driveway (while listening to podcasts).  At night we watch movies, while WORKING on my podcast!

- vacations we bring all our tech with us - including a wireless airport base station that still does dialup!  We enjoy going hiking, snorkling, zip lining, whatever, take tons of digital photos, then sit on the lanai and sending photos back to the poor slobs back at work!

B. What Victor Does then discussion

  • I had a hard time thinking of thing I do that do not envolve technology. Mary and I go on Photo safari to manny non tech places. Cruises, we love exotic locations like Mayan paramids , Mexico and any place with water.Going to the Zoo or to the Hungtinton Library to take picutersPlaying my sax. I haven't done this in a while but I use to take my sax to the beach and play on the sand often. I think I use to do it cause it was so "coo" I always thought of stories I read about Sonny Rollins playing on the Brooklyn bridge and practicing for hours.

What do you guys do who are listening and on the phones or chat now

C: Apple products in movies TV and more.

  • I don't know if it's becuase I'm an Apple FAN boy now but Mary and I see so many Apple products today in all kinds of movies, TV shows, commecials etc. Today we were watching I am Ledgend and I counded at least 6 apple products including 2 MacPros 2 cinema displays and one or two MacBook Pros.

  • In 2005 Robert Ebert said "Macs turn up in the movies all the time -- not so much because of product placement, but because so many movie people use them and like them. A historian of the future, counting all the on-screen computers between 1983 and today, would likely conclude that Macs represented 90 percent of the computer market.  Yet the Mac's role in the actual making of movies is far larger than the PC's. Macs are in editing suites, sound studios, and musicians' mixing rooms. Writers use them, agencies create ads and trailers on them, Web pages are designed on them -- and movies are literally made with the Mac."

    source: http://www.macworld.com/article/29180/2004/02/themacturns20.html

  •  Some Examples

    • Seinfeld featured several Macs during its run. Let's see... started off with a compact Mac, probably an SE/30

    • On 24 the good guys use MACS and the evil ones use PC :)

    •  Jurassic Park bad guys used PC too , others used Macs

    • Ross and Chandler both had powerbook g3s on friends, and Scrubs uses the TiBook.

    • on Independence Day Jeff Goldblum uses a powerbook.

    • I believe that sarah jessica parker uses a powerbook in Sex in the City

    • Whenever the Simpsons use a computer it has the Mac look--the interface anyway. When Homer did his "work from home" thing his computer "gonged" when he turned it on.

    • Austin Powers Goldmember - Austin uses a TiBook

- From Allison

  • Fun fact - if you see a Mac with no logo showing - that means Apple didn't PAY to have the Mac showing. I have a friend who works in product placement so she goes around selling the placement of products to the movies and tv shows.

So if that's not enought then here comes MacHeads the Movie http://www.macheadsthemovie.com/

Two brothers Kobi and Ron Shely are producing MacHeads.

    According to their site

"MacHeads is a documentary about fanaticism and unconditional devotion to a corporate brand. The film reveals the fascinating characters that make up the Macintosh community. Their stories take us on a journey through Mac history leading up to the Apple revolution and to its present day popularity to pose the ultimate question: Is Apple losing faith as a community and becoming just a…brand?"
