AGENDA

Podcasting for Mac Users (there are not Mac Dummies)

    • Review podcasting basics for those who want to start one

Ask what comments or Questions the live audience has?

Review equipment choices (beginner, intermediately and advanced)

Here is a basic set up I (Victor) recommends

Path 1 USB based podcasting

This is everthying you need for a basic set up.

1. Mic = Samson C03 USB Mic http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/C03usb/

This will connect directly into your macbook and act as a soundcard (as an imput to your mac). With this kind of set up you do NOT need an imic at all just plug in the mic to a USB port

$130.00

2. Desk Boom Mic Stand http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/MicStdDeskBm/

That one is nice cause it has a boom and is much more confortable $24.95

3. Pop filter http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/PopFilter6/

This is all you need (nothing fancy) $27

That's it for this set up Total is about 190 + tax and shipping

Path 2 Regular Analog Mic using iMic (the little switch needs to be set to mic not line)

1, Shure SM58 Mic http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/SM58/

An old standard for more than 40 years. Good rugged all around mic. Can't go wrong here $100

1.1 A Heil PR20 (not as big as the PR40 but very nice) Cost is $150.00 If I had the choice and the extra $50 I'd go with this instead of the Shure

2. XLR to 1/8 (to the iMic) Mic Cord http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/XVM115/

$11.00 This cord goes from the mic to the iMic to your mac

3. Mic Stand http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/MicStdDeskBm/

That one is nice cause it has a boom and is much more confortable $24.95

4. Pop filter http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/PopFilter6/

This is all you need (nothing fancy) $27

5. Griffin iMic http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/iMic/ $35.00

Total Cost

with Shure = about $170 plus shipping and taxes

with Heil = About $260 plus shipping and taxes

RSS feed, hosting providers and alike, What the hell does a MacUser do?

  • Well you can certainly do it all for Free. Check out Rob Walch's Podcast 411 Tutorial on totally free podcasting at http://podcast411.com/free/ He gives a step by step tutorial on how to do it for free.

  • You can also use talkshoe.com and tell them I (victor) sent you. You can do live podcasting on talkshoe or you can just upload regular studio shows as well. You can choose to just do it as a hobby or get paid. Again contact them at talkshoe.com or contact me at typicalmacuser@gmail.com and I'll point you in the right direction.

  • You can also do limited podcasting using your .mac account if you have one. again you can publish right from Garageband or from iWeb right to a custom podcasting page on your .mac, however since your download bandwith is limited on dot mac you won't be able to grow a substantial audience.

they have packages ranging from $5.00 for 100MB per month upload and unlimited downloads to $30 for 800MB per month uploads and unlimited downloads.

  • Podshow.com also offers some free packages but there are conditions which you should read about before you sign up.

Ask what comments or Questions the live audience has?

    • Review recording applications (Audacity (I know nothing about), Garage Band, Soundtrack Pro, Audio Hijack Pro)

For Free

    • Audio Hijack Pro

    • Garage Band

    • Freevers Sound Studio. I have found this application to be excellent for the price $79.95 US

http://freeverse.com/soundstudio/

What about those RSS feeds

There are Feedservices for free like

Feedburner.com

rss.scripting.com

feedvalidator.org

Recording Skype

      • Rouge Amoeba makes Audio Hijack pro which we talked about last week. It is one of the easiest ways to record Skype on a Mac

because it sets up the mix minus parameters so you don't get the dreaded echo.

      • Lastly Leo Laporte has two great posts on recording Skype. One was a quetioned ask on the techguys show and he posted a very detailed diagram ( I'll put it in the show notes)over at the techgulabs.com http://techguylabs.com/radio/ShowNotes/Show230

The other was is a blog entry on Leo's recording equipment over at twit.tv again I'll put the link in the show notes. http://www.twit.tv/podcastequipment

**

Victor's Current Set up.

I have not normally talked about this on the show and I want to say here and now that I'm a total audio junkie so this is total overkill for 95% of everyone wanting to do a podcast. I simply love audio and so I go for it.

Mic: Heil PR40 very good dynamic broadcast quality Mic:

http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Heil-Sound-PR40-Dynamic-Studio-Recording-Microphone?sku=271012&src=3SOSWXXA

$325

Mixer: Mackie Onyx 1220 with the firewire interface it's a 12 channel mixer which I connect via the analog (1/8 mini) cables to and from my Mac Pro) http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/Onyx1220

$900 with the firewire, $529 without

Recorder: I record outside of my mac, another words it's an external recorder. It's a TASCAM HD-P2 Flash based recorder

http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/HDP2/

$1,000

Outboard

DBX 266XL Compressor Limiter: Use this only on the live podcast $149

Software:

I mix using Sound Track Pro it's part of the Final Cut Studio suite. When I bought it it was about $200 but now you hae to buy Final Cut Studio to get it so it's $1,5000

http://www.apple.com/finalcutstudio/soundtrackpro/

To Master I use PEAK Pro 5.2 $499 Peak Pro is the Music industry standard for mastering. Way overkill for what I do, but the main reason I use this is because it has a RMS Leveler that makes levels all the sounds of anything I do so nothing sounds harsh and all of you don't have to play with your volume in your car. Levelator does very well for free now too. There is also PEAK LE for $99.00 which is awesome http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Bias-Peak-LE-5?sku=705802

Headphones: I use Sony MDR-7506 $99.97. Very comfortable and true sounding headphones. http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/MDR7506/
