Show Outline

lntroduce Allison : Tonight's special co-hostest is Allison Sheridan from the NosillaCast at http://www.podfeet.com/wordpress I've listen to Allison show for a while and she is interested in all things dealing wtih technology with an ever so slight ( or more than ever so ) slant towards the Macintosh computer. Tonight we are going to geeek out, give all of you an opportunity to get to know Allison better and talk about all things technolgy including all things Apple and Mac. Welcome to the show Allison.

Ask Allison to talk about her background

  • How long has she been using a Mac? How'd she get into Podcasting?
  • How does she deal with change in her life? Al will explain how she hates change, except when it comes to Mac software - beta, alpha, bring it on!
  • Discussion of how Parallels has opened up the world of Windows for Allison (and Linux)
  • Make her say something nice about Windows

So what do you guys in the audience want to ask Allison or what questions do you have for her

Items we hope Apple fixes on OS X Leopard

Victor's Picks

*

Spotlight. I want to use you, I want to take advantage of your great power. but I don't. instead I use LaunchBar or maybe quick silver. Maybe Launchbar realy is useful in Leopard.

*

Trashed Items can't be restored to their original locations. I know I can drag and drop the files from the trash to the desktop but if I make a mistake I should be able to at any time go back to the trash highlight the items and say "un - delete" even my Windows XP does this.

*

Safari , I've tried to love you... but why do I keep going back to fire fox. Either it's just that I'm stubborn or Safari just isn't up to snuff. It does not look to my eye, has no plugins (talk about your lack of 3rd paty apps. )

*

Maximizing a window is broken. It seems to work on some applications but not consistenty.

!

Allison's Picks

  • Pathfinder-like interface across all applications - especially the drop-box sort of capability
  • I DO use Safari, but I sure wish I could use it better on editing applications like Wordpress
  • I'm actually pretty happy with Tiger - but I'll load Leopard the day it comes out on my production machine!

What about the audience what do you guys want to see fixed in OS X?

Allison's top 3 Mac applications and why

this is hard - there's SO many!

  • Quicksilver (of course) from quicksilver.blacktree.com and Launchy from launchy.net for Windows to launch apps
  • Skitch from plasq.com/skitch for screen grabs - you can add arrows and text! Drag and drop to disk, to email, to web server, anywhere. I have beta invites still - send me an email at allison@podfeet.com
  • Transmit from panic.com/transmit for FTP uploads
  • Inquisitor from inquisitorx.com - an odd little plug-in for Safari that gives you search results in a pull-down as you type
  • Feeder and KIT from reinventedsoftware.com. Feeder to create all my html (like what I've inserted here) and to write my podcast notes AND to create my Feed. KIT is Keep it Together, nice little note taking, journaling, grab bag storage place.
  • Unplugged from briksoftware.com to tell you when your power cord gets knocked out.
  • MenuMeters from ragingmenace.com so I can monitor when a piece of s/w is misbehaving - like Flash on a website, or last week when a bad AVI file was spinning out of control just by clicking on it in the Finder
  • Disk Inventory X from derlien.com to find huge files on your disk to harvest space.

Notes from the show - links and stuff Al wrote down

  • Sapiens from http://www.donelleschi.com/sapiens/ - gesture-based app launcher
  • how to pronounce Victor's last name "Caw-Hee-aow"
  • Learn more about Katie MacCore - find her podcast
  • someone put a link to portable apps for the mac - I thought they were windows only. Link as I wrote it doesn't work, plan on fiddling with it to find it: http://portableapps.com/apps/operating_systems/mac-on-a-stick
  • from Bart: jellyfissh from grepsoft.net - allows different background in linux for terminal window each server you're working on
  • rapidoserial - free app to record serial numbers!

!

What about the listener it's been a while since we talked about this. What are you top applications these days?
